Was I really going to take this risk? I can still remember this day as if it was yesterday. It was a few years ago during the middle of September, the weather was feeling cool and the air felt freeing, that kind of fresh air you breathe during the fall. It was about a two-hour drive and I could feel my nerves about to explode. I could feel my heart beating faster as we got closer to our destination and all I could do was stare out the window of the car and think, – what that hell am I about to do?!
We finally arrived. I entered through some big garage-like-doors and headed to the front desk. I was asked to go down to a little room and there, they showed us a video that was about 20 minutes long and they gave me about 20 pages to sign. At that moment, I felt a different kind of fear, it was exhilarating. While signing those papers all I could read was “in case of injury or death” in bold letters. I took a deep breath, signed and turned in those papers.
It was now time. There was no turning back. I was fourteen and thousand of feet up from the ground with my knees on the edge of a plane. I took one last deep breath and jumped!
This has been the best experience I had ever had, I skydived. It went from being a stressful, scary, and heart-stopping situation into one of the best things thus far.
Skydiving to me can be a lot like life. We are faced with a ton of situations where we feel scared, uncertain, and confused. We feel doubt but do it, regardless.
Taking risk is part of achieving success. Si no arriesgas, no ganas. How many times have you found yourself in a similar situation? That makes you feel scared and uncertain but you take the risk. Sometimes, the scariest things end up being the most rewarding. Taking this risk represents stepping out of your comfort zone, being willing to try something different and taking a leap of faith.
Next time you are faced with a situation that requires some risk, don’t reject it out of fear. Embrace it!
The next time you are about to face some risks consider these 3 points:
Don’t over think it. Many times, overthinking a situation or decision stops you from accomplishing them. We find a thousand and one reasons why not to do it. When you feel those butterflies, and your legs are shaking just say yes and do it. Give it a shot! I have been able to take advantage of great opportunities by following my instincts more than my reasoning. But remember, always stick to your gut.
Ask. Part of taking risks involves doing things you don’t feel comfortable doing, and sometimes this requires you to step up and ask. Really, what do you have to lose? When you ask for something only 2 things can happen: 1. You get a positive response 2. You get a no. Have you thought of what happens if they say yes? Just ask!
Risk it all. As long as it feels good to you, go for it. Taking risks shows confidence. Don’t be afraid to stand out and make it. You know how they say opportunities don’t fall from the sky? Well, that is correct. You need to go out there and chase them. Often, after taking a big risk you might feel like a weight has being lifted off your shoulders, then you will see how you made the right choice.
All things considered, the next time you are about to jump out of a plane just go for it. It might be the best thing that ever happens to you.
